Morning light and the first honest hour
Before the inbox opens, there is a quieter version of the day. I have learned to protect it, badly at first, then with more care.
The first hour is honest because nothing has asked for a reply yet. The room is still deciding what kind of day it wants to be. Coffee is too hot. The notebook is still empty enough to be useful.
I used to treat that hour like leftover time: a chance to catch up, tidy the desk, glance at messages “just in case.” The work that mattered always arrived later, already tired.
If the day is going to have a center, it has to be placed there on purpose.
What the hour is for
One page. One problem. One thing that would still feel true in the evening. That is the whole method. I write until the mug is empty, then I let the rest of the machinery start.
Some mornings the page is a paragraph. Some mornings it is a list of what not to open. Both count. The point is not productivity. The point is beginning while the light is still kind.
When the hour ends, the day can be noisy. I have already met the part of it that belongs to me.
