Sumathi Valavu Review: ’90s Nostalgia With a Ghostly Twist

Sumathi Valavu, directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar, takes viewers back to a 1990s Kerala village where myths and memories collide. Now streaming on ZEE5, the film blends ghost lore with family drama, comedy, and a fair dose of nostalgia.

Story and Setting

The plot centers around a sharp road bend, feared by villagers as the haunted spot of Sumathi, a woman wronged and killed years ago. Anyone daring to cross it at night is said to be doomed.

At the heart of the story is Appu (Arjun Ashokan), a young man who gets caught in the legend while navigating his own personal battles. His romance with Bhama (Malavika Manoj) only complicates things further, especially since she happens to be the cousin of his rival Mahesh (Gokul Suresh).

Performances

  • Arjun Ashokan plays Appu with just the right mix of nervous energy and charm.
  • Malavika Manoj adds warmth to her role, making Bhama likable and believable.
  • Gokul Suresh delivers a steady performance as the rival, while Balu Varghese brings comic relief.
  • Shravan Mukesh appears as the antagonist but doesn’t leave a lasting mark.

Familiar faces like Sidharth Bharathan, Saiju Kurup, and Sshivada also add flavor in supporting roles.

Technical Highlights

One of the film’s strengths is how well it recreates the 1990s Kerala village setting. Ajay Mangad’s art direction nails the details, making the atmosphere feel authentic. Ranjin Raj’s music supports the story in places, though none of the songs stay with you after the credits.

The ghost sequences before the interval create genuine tension, but the second half leans more toward family drama, which dilutes the suspense.

Verdict

Sumathi Valavu doesn’t go all out as a horror film, nor does it excel purely as a family entertainer. Instead, it strikes a middle ground — offering a few scares, some laughs, and a good dose of 90s nostalgia. While uneven in execution, it works as a light watch for those who enjoy village backdrops and myth-driven stories.

The film is available to stream on ZEE5 in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, and Hindi.
